What is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that can cause vision loss, and in severe cases, even blindness for patients with diabetes. High levels of blood sugar cause damage to blood vessels in the retina, an area in the back of the eye, resulting in progressive loss of vision if left untreated. The longer you have diabetes and the less controlled your blood sugar is, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy.
Why is it important to get screened?
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), if you have diabetes, it’s important for you to get screened for this condition at least once a year. There are excellent treatments available today, but the sooner diabetic retinopathy is diagnosed, the more likely these treatments will be successful. Even if you have no symptoms, early screening can help save your vision.
