CPT® Code 92229 Paves the Way for Automated Retinal Screening

Technologies that have been emerging slowly over the past few years are now being adopted faster than ever before, sped up by the widespread disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. In healthcare, we see this propulsion in telemedicine and point-of-care automation.
For these new systems to be enacted in the United States, the American Medical Association (AMA) must create and revise CPT® (Current Procedural Terminology) codes to be used in the billing of innovative outpatient and office procedures. A lack of a fitting CPT code for a certain innovation can mean a hindrance to its application, therefore, the AMA has introduced “the first major overhaul in more than 25 years to the codes and guidelines for office and other outpatient evaluation and management (E/M) services”.
Among this set is the advancement of telehealth retinal codes, previously announced as 9225x, which have now been revealed as 92229 for retinal imaging with automated point-of-care, along with the code revision of 92227 and 92228 which are for remote imaging of retinal diseases, for detection and management.
AEYE Health welcomes this meaningful stride taken by the AMA in the fight against preventable blindness and looks forward to implementing its automated retinal screening solution with the help of these new CPT codes.
